Recognition is a threat because it gives equality, and equality allows vulnerability. The removal of hierarchy requires universal responsibility, which is also the mode of recognizing oneself—the conscience.

So we worship that which negates us, rather than accept which affirms us, when we don’t wish to have the responsibility of ourselves.

Purity is the recognition of ourselves as clarity, and our fetishes are our continued rejection of ourselves as confusion, sublimating the responsibility of ourselves to an other. Catharsis is the rejection of the rejection, bringing purity (affirmation) through the instrument of wisdom (rejection). This complexity is the paradoxical irony that constitutes not only consciousness, but life.
